Think Board Games Are Boring? These 10 Classics Will Prove You Wrong!
We LOVED board games growing up! There’s something magical about gathering around a table, rolling dice,
and diving into a board game with family or friends. Before screens took over
our free time, board games were the heart of game nights, bringing
endless laughter, strategic battles, and unforgettable memories. Whether you
grew up in the 70s, 80s, or even the 2000s, there are games that deserve a
comeback - games that spark friendly rivalries, test our creativity, and
remind us how fun unplugging can be.
So, let’s dust off those game boxes and bring back the classics! Here are
ten board games we should all play again, spanning decades of fun and
family bonding.
CLASSICS FROM THE 70s & 80s
1. Sorry! (1934, but a game night
staple in the 70s & 80s!)
🟥🟨🟩🟦 This game is simple but brutal - move your pieces around the board while sending opponents back to start with an evil grin and a gleeful "SORRY!" It’s a perfect mix of luck and revenge, making every round unpredictable.
👉 Why we should play again: It’s
an easy-to-learn game that brings out everyone’s competitive side yet is
still fun for all ages.
2. Battleship (1967, but HUGE in the
70s & 80s)
🚢💥 “You sunk my battleship!” The ultimate game of naval strategy, Battleship requires you to place your fleet and guess where your opponent’s ships are hidden. It’s part luck, part logic, and all excitement when you finally hit their last ship. If you caught our vlog about memorable 70s toy commercials, this was on the list. 👉🏾👉 Check it out here
👉 Why we should play again: It’s
a great mix of strategy and suspense, plus the satisfying feeling of
sinking an opponent’s ship never gets old.
3. Operation (1965, but a hit
throughout the 70s & 80s!)
⚡️🩺 A steady hand is required for this electrifying
game! Remove body parts from poor Cavity Sam without setting off the dreaded
buzzer. From the “Funny Bone” to the “Butterflies in the Stomach,” this game is
both silly and challenging.
👉 Why we should play again: It’s
a fun test of dexterity, and let’s be real - the buzzer still makes
everyone jump!
4. Twister (1966, but an absolute 70s
& 80s party game must!)
🟥🟦🟡🟩 While not a traditional board game, Twister
is a classic that gets people up and moving - sometimes into hilariously
awkward positions. The game’s colorful mat and random hand/foot placements make
it a party favorite that never goes out of style.
👉 Why we should play again: It’s
a perfect game for family bonding and endless laughs, especially when
adults realize they’re not as flexible as they used to be!
5. Trivial Pursuit (1981)
❓🧠 The ultimate trivia game was
an 80s phenomenon, testing players’ knowledge in six categories. With
expansions covering everything from pop culture to history, this game was both
educational and competitive.
👉 Why we should play again: It’s
a fantastic game for testing random knowledge and proving once and for
all who is the trivia champion of the family.
MODERN CLASSICS WORTH PLAYING AGAIN
6. The Game of Life (1960, but still a
hit today!)
🚗💰 The journey from college to
retirement in The Game of Life is full of unexpected twists. Will you
take the risky career path or play it safe? Will you have a full minivan of
kids or a solo road trip? With its colorful spinner and life-altering choices,
this game mirrors real life - only with a lot more laughs and far less stress.
👉 Why we should play again: It’s
a fantastic way to talk about choices, finances, and unexpected life events in
a fun and lighthearted way.
7. Pictionary (1985)
🎨🤣 You don’t have to be an artist to
love Pictionary - in fact, the worse you are at drawing, the funnier it
gets! Players race against the clock to sketch out clues while their teammates
frantically guess what they’re supposed to be looking at. Is that a giraffe or
a palm tree? Who knows!
👉 Why we should play again: It’s
a guaranteed laughter fest and an excellent way to test how well you and
your family can communicate under pressure.
8. Scattergories (1988)
📝⏳ Think fast! In Scattergories,
players race against the clock to come up with words that fit a specific
category - but here’s the catch: all your answers must start with the same
letter. A “B” category for “Things Found in a Kitchen”? You’d better think
beyond “Butter”!
👉 Why we should play again: It’s
a hilarious test of creativity and debating over whether someone’s answer is
valid always leads to fun arguments.
9. Catan (1995)
🌍🏡 I have to admit we haven't played this one. Although, we hear Catan (formerly The Settlers of Catan) is one of the most addictive modern board games. Players collect resources (like wood, wheat, and brick) to build settlements and roads, strategically blocking others while negotiating trades. It’s part strategy, part luck, and fully engaging. You better believe we're putting this on our "snag it" list!
👉 Why we should play again: It’s
the perfect mix of strategy and social interaction, making game night a
true battle of wits (and diplomacy).
10. Telestrations (2009)
📖😂 Note to self - add to Amazon cart. Think of Telestrations as a
cross between Telephone and Pictionary. One person starts with a
word, draws it, and then passes their sketch to the next person, who writes
down what they think it is - only for the process to repeat. By the time
the drawing gets back to the original player, it’s usually completely
unrecognizable in the most hilarious way.
👉 Why we should play again: If
you want non-stop laughter and total chaos, this is your game!
Why Board Games Still Matter
Don't get us wrong - screens are great. In an age where they dominate our attention, all we are saying is give board games a chance! They're a fun way to slow down and truly connect.
So, grab a game, gather your crew, and let the laughter and
competition begin! What’s your all-time favorite board game? Drop it in the
comments! 🎲✨
